The Pennsylvania LIFE Program May be an Viable Alternative to a Nursing Home

Nursing homes are eschewed by seniors for a variety of reasons, including the surrendering of personal independence, the financial cost, and the perception that nursing homes are “the end of the line.” However, in the state of Pennsylvania, about 400 Philadelphians are taking a novel approach to nursing home care. Living Independently for Elders, or LIFE, has partnered with the St. Agnes Continuing Care Center to provide comprehensive care for older individuals in what many call a “nursing home without walls.”

Should You Obtain Long Term Care Insurance in Florida?

Up to 70% of individuals over the age of 65 will require long term care and/or skilled nursing at some point in their lives. In the state of Florida, nursing home care can cost up to $77,000 annually. Many states, including Florida, have expanded their long term care partnership programs to offer individuals a means of paying for their long term care needs. As a result, individuals who have a qualifying long term care insurance policy can obtain Medicaid coverage for their long term care needs without having to spend almost all of their assets first. This is important because Medicaid requires that an individual spend down to $2,000 of his/her own assets in order to qualify for state-funded long term care coverage. (more…)

Services such as ResCare, BeClose, SimplyHome, and QuietCare all operate via discretely placed video cameras and sensors which help track the daily activities and needs of elderly individuals. Can Assisted Living Facilities Adequately Care for Alzheimer’s Residents?

Some assisted living facilities portray themselves as being capable of attending to all types of residents, including those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. However, there is a big difference between the skilled nursing that is provided at a nursing home versus the non-skilled service that is provided at assisted living facilities. Nursing homes are also likely to have sufficient staff in place, as well as the specialized medical and surveillance equipment, that is needed for adequately taking care of Alzheimer’s or dementia patients.
