Providing home care for a person with a mental and/or physical disability is always challenging; however, for a person with dementia, especially Alzheimer’s dementia, providing home care is especially difficult because the disability usually worsens over time. As such, the primary caregiver will eventually require a substitute caregiver in order to take care of personal business, to run errands, or simply to take a respite from daily caregiving responsibilities. Nursing homes offer skilled nursing and around-the-clock care for individuals who are too sick or frail to adequately care for themselves. However, many of these individuals would prefer to remain in their own homes rather than live in a nursing home. There may also be concerns about the costs involved in nursing home care. Fortunately, many states, including California, offer two alternative programs to nursing homes: the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), and the Social Managed Care Plan. (more…)

Maintaining a loved one in a nursing home can be quite expensive. In California, the average annual cost of having one person living in a private room in a nursing home (which provides skilled nursing) is over $87,000. Even in an assisted living facility, where residents are expected to be more independent (and are less supervised), the average annual cost is $42,000. (more…)
