Long Term Care in Saskatoon

Saskatchewan boasts 280 long term care facilities with a population of 8600 residents. Slightly more than 10% of those facilities are in Saskatoon. Many of the senior citizens in these homes are fairly well-off, due to the fact that Saskatoon is above the mean in general wealth.

In the near future however, as baby boomers age, the number of people needing to enter long term care is predicted to double. Coupled with a disintegrating health care system, senior/elder care is likely to reach a state of crisis as more people become unable to afford private care, and public care dollars shrink.

The types of facilities for long term care in Saskatoon include assisted living, special care, convalescence, and full nursing home care. Saskatoon’s 29 facilities include both public and private care options. Seven of them are closely associated with a particular religious group. Home care is also becoming an attractive alternative. For example, Nurse Next Door just opened a Saskatoon franchise in August of 2009.

It has recently become possible to purchase long term care insurance in Canada. Such polices can cover needs whether the level of senior/elder care required is full-time medical, or simple daily needs while the person remains in their own home. Such insurance can bring great peace of mind to both seniors and their children who are also likely to be anxious over the uncertainties of the future.

At the top end of long term care insurance coverage, $300 per day of tax-free benefits can be had. The criteria to be able to begin collecting are that the covered individual has lost the ability to perform two of six clearly defined daily living activities.

Saskatoon’s many options for long term care, coupled with a plan to cover such needs can provide great security for families.
