Aging at Home in Ontario
Because the number of seniors in Ontario will more than double in the next sixteen years, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care is developing what they call “Ontario’s Aging at Home Strategy”. Announced in 2007, the strategy calls for an increase in home care and community support services to allow elderly residents of Ontario to age comfortably at home, rather than moving into a long term care home.
But will this strategy actually work? Critics have some concerns, pointing out that home care isn’t right for many elderly citizens, and that the strategy is a way of shirking the responsibility of providing more and better long term care homes. Time – and the ever-evolving state of public health care – will determine what kind of long term care those nearing retirement age can expect from Ontario in the upcoming decades. In the meantime, if you are nearing retirement age, start talking with your family now about what kind of long term care you would like to have once you reach the age when you need regular medical supervision.
